The Eastern Mediterranean Network on Heart Health was founded in 1997 and is affiliated with the World Heart Federation, Council on Epidemiology and Prevention. The mission of the Network is to establish cooperative projects and programmes to help prevention and control of cardiovascular diseases and to promote healthier lifestyles in the region. The Network hopes to foster collaborative efforts within the Eastern Mediterranean region by networking national and societies, associations, foundations, working groups active in the area of cardiovascular disease control and prevention with in the framework of primary, secondary prevention and rehabilitation, by addressing public awareness and scientific activities. The Network also aims to foster partnerships and promote cooperation in research and catalyze pooling of relevant data, in order to identify areas and strategies with relevance for common intervention in the region with a view to optimizing resource. The Network also hopes to provide a platform for exchanging information and for the building of regional collaborations.
So far the activities of Network have included the successful organization of two international congresses; these include the First Eastern Mediterranean Congress on Heart Health which was held in Isfahan, Iran in May 1997 and the Second Eastern Mediterranean Congress on Heart Health, which was hosted in Beirut, Lebanon in May 2000. The Third Eastern Mediterranean Congress on Heart Health is scheduled to be held in Cairo, Egypt in April 2002

The activities of the Network are now being broadened to include cardiovascular disease issues with a population-based focus; logically the first step in this direction is the structuring of the network. During a recent meeting of the East Mediterranean Network held on May 30, in Osaka, Japan, council members from the respective countries were chosen to spearhead activities in their own regions and to gather broad based support for the Network.

We are pleased to be officially announcing the names of the council and other members of the Network in this issue of our newsletter and look forwards to updating you on a regular basis.
